What is Australia's GO Scheme?

The GO Scheme (Guarantee of Origin Scheme) is a new federal certification framework in Australia designed to succeed the Large-scale Generation Certificate (LGC) regime. It is part of the Future Made in Australia plan and provides transparent, government-backed certification of environmental credentials, aligning with global expectations. It was formally launched on 3 November 2025.

What are REGO certificates?

REGO stands for Renewable Electricity Guarantee of Origin. These certificates certify each megawatt-hour of eligible renewable electricity and are considered the likely successor to Large-scale Generation Certificates (LGCs).

What are PGO certificates?

PGO stands for Product Guarantee of Origin. These certificates certify low-emissions products such as hydrogen, and eventually metals and fuels, allowing businesses to verify embedded emissions. PGOs will not be tradable.

When do LGCs end and what happens to the GO Scheme in the meantime?

The LGC scheme closes on 31 December 2030. From now until then, REGO and LGCs will operate concurrently, but you cannot issue both certificates for the same MWh — you must choose one, although your system can be registered for both.
