Airline Parts Manufacturer Lands Great Opportunities

Northmore Gordon worked closely with a Singapore- based parts manufacturer over 2021 to complete an Energy Efficiency Opportunities Assessment as required by Singapore’s National Environment Agency (NEA). The complex requirements of the Program were fully met and the report submitted on time. In addition, NG identified practical energy saving opportunities that are now being implemented.

The Client

The Client has been established in Singapore for many years, with several large manufacturing operations. The operation involves high-precision parts machining, custom treatment, finishing, and final inspection. It is supported by utilities including compressed air, air conditioning and large chiller systems, centralised lubrication systems, and cooling towers.

The Project

To meet the requirements of the Energy Conservation Act, Singapore sites that use over 54 TJ per annum must undertake an Energy Efficiency Opportunity Assessment.

The upgrades recommended included compressed air efficiency, shutting off unnecessary operation of equipment, and more efficient cooling for the machine-centre oil cooling system.

Our Role

Northmore Gordon worked very hard to complete the work to the standard

required by the NEA in the timeframe. This included working through the difficulties of restrictions that occurred in 2020 due to

Covid lockdowns. The work included installing temporary metering, reading of on-site meters, development of a detailed energy balance, analysis of the data, identification of energy efficiency opportunities in conjunction with the Client, completion of the NEA’s report template, and achieving sign-off by the Client stakeholders.

Who was the client in the Northmore Gordon 'Airline Parts Manufacturer Lands Great Opportunities' case study?

The client was a long-established Singaporean parts manufacturer producing high-quality precision components in clean-room environments for specialised industrial and commercial applications, involving high-precision parts machining, custom treatment, finishing, and final inspection, supported by utilities including compressed air, air conditioning and large chiller systems, centralised lubrication systems, and cooling towers.

What project did Northmore Gordon complete for this Singapore-based manufacturer?

Northmore Gordon worked with the client over 2021 to complete an Energy Efficiency Opportunities Assessment (EEOA-RC) as required by Singapore's National Environment Agency (NEA), meeting the complex requirements of the program and submitting the report on time.

What regulatory requirement made this assessment necessary?

Under Singapore's Energy Conservation Act, sites that use over 54 TJ per annum must undertake an Energy Efficiency Opportunity Assessment.

What upgrades did Northmore Gordon recommend for the airline parts manufacturer?

The recommended upgrades included compressed air efficiency improvements, shutting off unnecessary operation of equipment, and more efficient cooling for the machine-centre oil cooling system.

What are the estimated annual energy and carbon savings from the project?

The estimated annual savings are 1,900 MWh of energy and 780 tCO2e of carbon abatement, along with approximately $180,000 in OPEX savings.

What is the CAPEX and payback period for the recommended project?

The project has an estimated CAPEX of approximately $460,000 and a payback period of approximately 2.5 years.

What challenges did the client face that this project needed to address?

Challenges included competitive pressures to provide high quality service while minimising operating costs, energy bills representing a substantial cost of operations, global targets for energy and water efficiency, and ageing equipment and production pressures meaning savings measures could not impact reliability.

What additional benefits are expected beyond energy and cost savings?

Additional benefits include more stable air pressure, more stable operating temperatures, and lower maintenance costs on pumps through reduced running hours.

What was Northmore Gordon's role in completing this project, and what obstacles did they overcome?

Northmore Gordon worked to complete the work to the standard required by the NEA within the timeframe, including working through difficulties caused by Covid lockdown restrictions in 2020. The work included installing temporary metering, reading on-site meters, developing a detailed energy balance, analysing data, identifying energy efficiency opportunities with the client, completing the NEA's report template, and achieving sign-off by client stakeholders.
