The Client 

Nomad Coffee Group (Nomad) is a collective of coffee brands (including the Veneziano Coffee Roasters and Coffee Hit brands, and Black Bag Roasters, the private label roasting arm of the business) and people who believe great coffee can make a difference to the everyday and are a commercial scale roaster of coffee. 

Nomad have a strong focus on sustainability, being both Climate ActiveClimate Active is an accreditation program for Australian companies to certify their organisations, products, services, events, buildings or precincts as carbon neutral. The program is backed and administered by the Australian government. Companies have to measure their scope 1, 2 and material scope 3 emissions, reduce where possible and offset the remainder by purchasing and retiring offsets. Allowed offsets are LGCs for scope 2 and ACCUs, CERs, RMUs, VCUs or VERs for scope 1 or 3 emissions. Annual reporting is required and published on the Climate Active website. More Carbon NeutralThe act of offsetting all scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions associated with a product or service. and B Corporation certified. To further their understanding of their energy consumption and emissions, and identify reduction opportunities, Nomad undertook and Energy Audit at their Richmond café and roastery. 

The Project 

Northmore Gordon completed the complete AS/NZS 3598 Type 2 Energy Audit, consisting of site energy use analysis (energy use baseline, breakdown and use patterns, tariff analysis, short term electrical metering, and metering recommendation), individual coffee roaster energy performance (energy use per unit of production) and opportunity identification (including savings, costs and funding availability). 

The energy audit was funded by the Australian Federal Government’s Energy Efficient Communities program.

• The audit identified savings opportunities of 37% of energy and 32% of emissions 

• Implementation of priority and secondary opportunities will lead to: 

• Energy SavingsElectricity or gas savings or both. of 871 GJA gigajoule (GJ) is the equivalent to 1 billion joules. A joule is a measure of the energy required to send an electrical current of one ampere through a resistance of one ohm for one second. One GJ is equal to 277.8 kilowatt hours ( kWh), 1.055 million British thermal units (Btu) or 0.17 barrels of oil. p.a. (9%) 

• Energy Cost savings of up to $19,419 p.a. (8%) 

• Scope 2 Greenhouse gas savings of 42 tCO2-e p.a. (10%) 

Notes 

• Payback periods for the opportunities vary between 0.9 and 4.6 years. 
• The site purchases renewable electricity, hence emissions reductions will come from reductions in natural gas. 

Challenges 

• The site has no sub-metering, so breakdown of energy & emissions per area or major equipment can only be estimated. 

• Identifying tangible energy and emissions improvement opportunities for industrial applications required specialist knowledge from Northmore Gordon 

Outcomes 

• Improved awareness of where to focus their attention when reducing energy and emissions. 

• Reduced maintenance by elimination of equipment operation when not required, or reducing equipment duty.
