The work achieved through this Energy Efficiency Project has taken the water corporation from having an overall target, to having a system in place to ensure that the target is supported by practical measures and continuous improvement – providing the confidence that this target will be met. All the while identifying and implementing a range of practical measures for increasing energy efficiency and improving process performance.

The Client

A regional Victorian water corporation servicing over 300,000 residents with more than 250 water treatment, wastewater reclamation and pumping station sites in Victoria. All Victoria water corporations are working towards net zero as part of the Statement of Obligation (Emissions Reductions) and many of them have engaged with Northmore Gordon to help.

The Project

The water corporation’s strategy leading into 2030 focuses on driving regional prosperity by addressing the core challenges of their service region, including climate change, population growth, rapid technological advancement and economic transition. As part of their commitment, the water corporation has set targets of 100% renewable energy by 2025 and net zero emissions by 2030.

Whilst helping to address climate change, this will also ensure that service costs to customers are kept as low as possible. In order to meet these ambitious targets, the water corporation required a company-wide Energy Management System, as well as the improvement of energy efficiency controls and technologies across their range of water treatment sites and distribution networks.

The Outcome

An Energy Management System has now been developed and is being incorporated across all major departments at the water corporation, with energy having become a regular consideration in all organisational decisions. Key sites have also adopted new energy efficient technologies.

Our Role

• Enact the key actions from a detailed review of their current approach to energy management
• Assess the current performance of the corporation’s top 14 energy consuming sites
• Identify over 65 opportunities for improvement
• Prioritise and scope all opportunities, proceeding to a coordinated implementation plan across the sites.
• Drastically reduce project payback through registering projects for the energy certificate value (VEU PBA method)
• The water corporation engaged Northmore Gordon to work collaboratively with the energy team to: Develop an integrated organisation wide Energy Management System
